Does anyone know how we would go about getting street lights installed on our street? Our street is rediculously dark (as are the ones around it) and I know several of my neighbors share my concern about safety.
Thanks!

your question asked about street lights on your street, but does not list the streets to which you want the lights. if you are in the blendon township area i suggest attending a township trustee meeting and asking what can be done to get the lights. the township trustee meeting is every other wednesday, 6:30 p.m. at the senior center on hempstead rd. the scheduled dates are on our (HRAA website www.huberridge.org - this website) community calender. the next meeting is this wednesday nov. 28th. you may get better results or answers if several residents on your street attended the meeting. yes - street lights do deter some crime and allow neighbors to help watch the street and other neighbors properties for suspicious activity. i suggest until you get a answer or lights, that the local residents turn your porch lights on. this has been proven to be effective.
this is your (our) community and association you can and do make a difference.

Street Lights
Dear Resident,
Street lights are a benefit and can make a neighborhood safer, more attractive (depending on the style), and are more appealing to future buyers. You should know that residents who have street lights pay assessments on their taxes.
How you go about getting them installed on your street? - my assumption is you would approach our trustees with the matter. They meet this Wednesday and every other Wednesday after that; 6:30 p.m. at the Senior Center. Present your request during the open session. Ask about the procedure/process.
Maybe it would help the process if your neighbors signed a petition saying this is something they want. Some residents might not want the assessment. The assessment pays for the utility - I think. And all on the street help pay for it.
Hope this helps. I wish you success.

Street Lights
The issue of street lights has come up several times in the past and I have always been in favor of lighting neighborhoods. It is unfortunate that the original developers did not petition for lights when they built the neighorborhoods several years ago. When I originally took office, we had mercury vapor lights which were a nightmare to keep operational. I read an article about high-pressure sodium lights and convinced the board to remove the mercury vapor and install the high-pressure sodium. They are more effecient and cost less to operate. Blendon Twp. was one of the first communities to go with high-pressur sodium.
To answer your question: there is a lengthy legal procedure by which the property owners may petition for the installation of street lights (Sec, 515, ORC). Once installed, each property owner is assessed a fee paid twice annually with their property taxes. If you still want to pursue the installation of street lights for your neighborhood, I will be happy to work with you and your neighbors in initiating the process. If you have additional questions you may reach me through 882-1270 or my home number 890-3800. You are welcome to attend one of our trustee meetings and, the results and answers will be just as good with you as it would be if you had several residents with you. If there are security issues in your neighborhood, I will have our Chief of Police work with you on that issue. Thank you.
