Reply to oppossum
We too had a oppossum in our back yard living under either our gazebo or shed. Of course this made our dog bark like an idiot every time she went out but other than that the animal didn't bother us.
Eventually we'd had enough of the barking and we did pursue an estimate from Varment Guard which came back in excess of $200. Unfortunately the Ridge is well known in the pest elimination industry (according to Varment Guard) for having a network of sewers under our homes in which animals such as oppossums and racoons freely roam and live down there as well as in our woods.
We finally figured that the creature would go away if we made sure there were no food sources out there whatsoever. We got one of those big covered garbage cans from Local Waste (we had previously seen ripped trash bags in our cans without lids) and we don't feed our dog outside. We haven't seen the oppossum around for quite awhile now....so, we assume it's moved on.
