I was out of town for four days and came home to find yellow flags all along the front of my yard and many of my neighbors' yards. Anyone know what they're for?

gas line markers
little yellow flags accross yards are markers for undergroud natural gas lines. these markers indicate where the gas lines are located so that they are not dug up. ohio american water may have asked them to mark the gas lines in that area so they may dig and/or replace/repair water lines, or i have seen columbia gas in our area replacing gas lines. either way these are markers so that when digging one might know were not to dig or be very carefull w/digging there. usually a utility co. request these to be marked before they dig. |

how long will they be there?
Does anyone know for sure why someone has marked the gas lines? The flags have been there 3 weeks now and we still don't know why. Are we supposed to mow around them? Shouldn't we get some sort of notice if they're going to be digging up our front yard? By marnie |

yes - mow them over
3 weeks is long enouph. usually they are marked for a day or 2 before digging. you should probably have been advised if your yard was to be dug up. i would not mow around them, its been 3 weeks, pull them up and resume life as normal. if it is that improtant after 3 weeks they will mark them again and leave you a note as to what is going on. usually after markings work is done 1-3 days afterwards.
