Huber Ridge Area

Hi Neighbors,

the solicitor who just came to my door troubled me enough for me to make time to post.  Blendon Township Trustees adopted a transient vendors ordinance effective March 31, 2010.

It is four pages, easy to read, and can be found on their website BlendonTwp.org under Legislative.

In short, it states that all vendors must register with the township prior to soliciting in our neighborhood.  There are numerous reasons why this is so good for all - one is that it will reduce the scams that take place; they MUST show their township approved license with a RAISED seal.  If they do not, then they can be charged with a minor misdemeanor.  Too many out there exploit youth through certain types of solicitation, so this should minimize vendors or keep these folks out of our community.

The ordinance also states that if we clearly have our doors marked with "NO SOLICITORS" posted, then they are not to come to our home.  The ordinance also provides acceptable hours and days of solicitation.  I highly recommend reading the ordinance!

An article was in the township newsletter (which is posted on their website) but the article did not mention the added benefit of our posting "NO SOLICITORS" somewhere very visible.

I did report the people who came to my door to our police and provided the license number; could not determine the state - two very young solicitors, both with blond hair, one female and one male.  Out of town license plate, black four door small car similar to a Mazda 5 (I am terrible with car descriptions).

They were selling books and apparently a neighbor let them know we had children.  The girl who spoke had an accent and boldly asked me about each of my neighbors - I said no to all she pointed to and cut her off.  I told her I would talk to her if she got a vendor's license.  I doubt she will.  My door is clearly marked, by the way, and I pointed to the sign, she still spoke - so I determined to report them.

Excellent post Pam and thanks for putting it out there to help awareness of this newly, but LONG time in the works ordinance!  I know that people in the Ridge have been asking for this for years as it comes up periodically at our HRAA meetings for discussion.  So glad it's come to fuition.....now we all need to use it and hopefully, eventually, the word will get around that solicitors need to straighten up and fly right in Blendon Township!
