Hazardous Household Materials Disposal

A couple of years ago, I remember an event at one of the local firehouses where we could bring old gas and oil, unused paint, etc to be disposed of properly.  I haven't seen anything in the papers about this recently and I need to get rid of some old paint and propane containers.  Does anyone have inside knowledge on whether or not they are going to do this again?

P.S. We buy the tiny non-refillable propane tanks for our firepit and cannot figure out how to dispose of them.  We bought them at Lowe's, but they won't take them back when empty.  I've called/emailed a couple of propane companies but they won't respond.  Unless someone knows what I can do to get rid of them, I'm stuck with them.

SWACO Recycles Household
Hazardous Wastes This Saturday

SWACO will sponsor the first mobile Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection of 2011 for Franklin County residents this Saturday, April 30th from 8 AM until 2 PM at Ashland Inc, 5200 Blazer Parkway in Dublin.

In 2010, residents delivered 461,949 pounds of corrosives, acids, fluorescent light bulbs, and other Household Hazardous Wastes to SWACO.  All materials collected from residents are recycled if possible or disposed of in the most environmentally sound manner.  A complete list of acceptable items is available online at www.swaco.org/SmartPeople/HHW.aspx .  A reminder, SWACO does not accept latex or water based paints at HHW collections.  Those paints are not hazardous and once dried can be thrown in the trash.  If you are unsure whether the paint is water based or latex, read the instructions on the can.  Any paint that cleans up with soap and water, we do not accept.

There are three additional SWACO mobile HHW collections scheduled for 2011.  A late spring collection will take place on Saturday, June 18th.  SWACO will partner with the City of Columbus to hold that event at the Morse Road Transfer Station at 4260 Morse Road.

The fall collections will kick off on Saturday, September 3rd with an event in partnership with the City of Westerville.  That collection will take place at the Westerville Service Department, 350 Park Meadows Drive.  The final mobile collection of the year will be held in conjunction with the City of Grove City on Saturday, October 15th at TOSOH SMD Inc. at 3600 Gantz Road.

All SWACO mobile HHW collections are for Franklin County residents only.  Each of the collections will take place from 8 AM until 2 PM.

In addition to the mobile collections, SWACO’s permanent residential HHW collection center at 1249 Essex Avenue in Columbus is available Wednesdays and Fridays 12 PM-6 PM and Thursdays 9 AM-5 PM.

Hopefully this helps everyone.

Thanks
