My service animal

Posted in: Huber Ridge Area
I have a very unusual service animal and very irritating neighbors who like to call the cops if I sneeze to loud. It is not that uncommon to have on of these as a service animal and are legal but due to us living in a township with so many rules and regulations I just don't want any trouble. I am in the process of getting the remainder of the paperwork from my doctor so he will be completely registered as a service animal and not just a companion animal. Meaning I can take him everywhere and not just pet him while I'm at home. I don't expect everyone to know all of the laws but I don't have to show paperwork showing he is registered when asked nor tell the reason why I have him such as what my disability is because it isn't obvious because I'm not blind or in a wheelchair. I'm just sick and tired of feeling as if I have to hide my service animal due to my grumpy neighbors and not knowing what all laws in this township are going to change from day to day. My service animal happens to be a mini horse which is probably better trained than most dogs are and less aggressive. Legal just like dogs due to that point as well but you know how it goes. One minute a Pitt bull is legal the next it's not. I have had the cops at my door for my Halloween decorations offending my neighbor just because he wanted them to get them to tell me to take them down so why wouldn't I be worried that the only thing I have left could be ripped away as well. Anyone know if the letter from my doctor is enough to shut this guy and his ex wife up? That way I can have my service animal I peace? Thanks!!!
Sorry you are having issues with your neighbors, people are pretty petty. I'm sure the doctors note should be sufficient. My son has developmental disabilities and I got a letter from his doctor to be allowed to take our dog to his grandparents who do not allow dogs in there association. You should be fine. I think it's awesome you have a mini horse, I love horses!

Dear Neighbor,

Have you asked our township administrator, Bryan Rhoads, about your service animal?  Yours is an unusual case for sure, so I can understand why your neighbors may have called.  I will ask Bryan for you and for me because I am curious.

I cannot help wondering how you deal with the horse manure, and that could be part of your neighbor's concern.  (By the way, I love horses.  I used to muck stalls as a teen).  Manure could/would be a concern with the small lots we have in the Ridge.

To assure you, Township laws do not change day to day.  It takes a lot to change the laws, so try not to concern yourself with that too much.  And all laws are intended for the good of the community.

Happy New Year, and hope to get back to you soon.

Pam Clegg, neighbor
