Makassar and Manila folks, be aware, we seem to have a residential red fox. Not sure where he or she lives, but again the fox was seen walking west on Makassar last night around 11:30 p.m. A resident heard what sounded like screams, checked out the window, and saw the fox. Friday night the fox was on the corner of Manila and Makassar. A resident saw it dive into leaves for something. The next morning I saw remains of what was apparently a raccoon in a neighbor's front yard - not much left. The fox is a good thing for the neighborhood in many ways, especially in light of rat problems. "Red Foxes eat whatever is available. They are actually omnivores and eat many things besides meat. Their main food, however, is small mammals, including: mice, voles, shrews, moles, squirrels, rabbits, woodchucks, opossums, raccoons, skunks, muskrats, and beaver." I have heard from neighbors that this fox is quite beautiful. I hope we will appreciate this animal, but if your dog barks at night while outside, you may want to check around. I have seen the youtube video of the cat and red fox, and some believe that red foxes are afraid of cats. I saw what the fox did to the raccoon and would not be surprised at all if a cat met its demise buy a hungry fox.
