Cars parked on the streets

Posted in: Huber Ridge Area

Unfortunately there really is not a good answer out there for this problem.  While speed bumps are a thought they have downsides to them as well.  Speed bumps have been shown to increase response times for emergency vehicles, increase vehicle wear and tear, air pollution, and noise, increase the cost of street maintenance and make roads much harder if not impossible to plow and salt.  There are even studies that show that speed bumps actually cause more accidents and speeding than they prevent.  Perhaps you could attend the next trustee meeting and bring this up in order to facillitate a conversation with the Township road director John Giamarco, the trustees and local residents such as Mr. Welch.  Our next meeting is Tuesday October 27th at 6:30pm.

Keep in mind that some of us don't have garages to park our cars in.  I have a single-file driveway with no garage, and now that my teenage son is a licensed driver, we are a three-car family.  Only two of our cars can fit in our driveway, so my son is forced to park on the street.  My husband and I have to play leapfrog with our vehicles every day depending on who pulled into the driveway first the night before and who has to leave first the next morning.  To make matters worse, I live on Paris Boulevard North, right off of Dempsey.  I can promise you that we see far more cut-through traffic than most of the streets in our neighborhood and sometimes have a hard time getting out of our own driveway.  So to sum it up, we all have to make sacrifices and be inconvenienced from time to time, it's not the end of the world.

Non-commercial vehicles are permitted to be parked on the street in residential areas as long as they adhere to the below listed prohibitions and requirements.

Blendon Township police officers routinely observe parked vehicles and take action if they observe violations. If residents observe violations they should call our radio dispatcher at (614) 889-9494. Our officers typically work with vehicle owners to resolve violations short of issuing traffic citations when practical. Unsafe situations are resolved immediately and may result in the vehicle being towed.

4511.68 Parking - prohibited acts.

(A) No person shall stand or park a trackless trolley or vehicle, except when necessary to avoid conflict with other traffic or to comply with sections 4511.01 to 4511.78, 4511.99, and 4513.01 to 4513.37 of the Revised Code, or while obeying the directions of a police officer or a traffic control device, in any of the following places:

(1) On a sidewalk, except a bicycle;

(2) In front of a public or private driveway;

(3) Within an intersection;

(4) Within ten feet of a fire hydrant;

(5) On a crosswalk;

(6) Within twenty feet of a crosswalk at an intersection;

(7) Within thirty feet of, and upon the approach to, any flashing beacon, stop sign, or traffic control device;

(8) Between a safety zone and the adjacent curb or within thirty feet of points on the curb immediately opposite the ends of a safety zone, unless a different length is indicated by a traffic control device;

(9) Within fifty feet of the nearest rail of a railroad crossing;

(10) Within twenty feet of a driveway entrance to any fire station and, on the side of the street opposite the entrance to any fire station, within seventy-five feet of the entrance when it is properly posted with signs;

(11) Alongside or opposite any street excavation or obstruction when such standing or parking would obstruct traffic;

(12) Alongside any vehicle stopped or parked at the edge or curb of a street;

(13) Upon any bridge or elevated structure upon a highway, or within a highway tunnel;

(14) At any place where signs prohibit stopping;

(15) Within one foot of another parked vehicle;

(16) On the roadway portion of a freeway, expressway, or thruway.

Additionally, vehicles must be parked with the right (passenger) side toward the curb, facing the proper direction of travel, and not more than 12 inches from the curb.  Parking on the street is allowed for no more than 48 hours, the vehicle must then be moved.

In response to the concerns on this forum we put the speed trailer on Cairo Road again yesterday, and I personally checked for any parking violations. None found. As soon as we get our computer tech to download the trailer results we will get them posted to our website.

Another consideration that I did not post yesterday is street width.  Our largest fire trucks are 10 feet wide. They need more than 10 feet to pass on a straightaway, and even more on a curve.  We obviously won't wait for an emergency to occur before we start moving parked vehicles if the roadway becomes impassable to fire equipment.

I understand the frustration of the resident who started this subject on the forum, but as another resident pointed out, some families have several cars coming and going at different times.  On-street parking is their only workable option.

Hopefully, through forums like this, residents who do have the option may start seeing it as a courtesy to park their cars on their driveway when possible.
