Barking dogs

There is a house on Panama that lets it's two dogs out barking in the yard for HOURS every day.  None of the neighbors are able to even BE outside for the two dogs with their faces through the fence barking their heads off at you. It is so unbelievably rude and seriously infringes on the ability of their neighbors to enjoy their own property (the dogs can also be heard while INSIDE, over the TV, music, white noise makers, etc).

Franklin County Animal Control Ordinance states that "barking dogs, regardless of the manner or repetition of the barking, are not engaging in a prohibited act solely due to their barking". I could swear that I read on this site, though, that Blendon Township regulations state you can call the police after 10 continuous minutes. Anyone know where I can find that in print? I am DREADING their being out all day once the weather gets nicer.

Hi.

I had the same issue myself, but decided to handle it a little quicker for myself.  I installed a Bark Control Birdhouse.  It's hidden (better in the summertime), and it's quite amusing at first.  The 2 dogs bark, and then yelp, and that's it.  Took about a week of this for the dogs to realize it will always happen.

It might be worth a shot, as long as the dogs are younger and not losing their hearing.  You will need to get it as close as you can, or turn the sensitivity all the way up.

Hi Neighbors,

We have the same issue too.  We also bought a Bark Control Birdhouse and have found it pretty effective with bringing peace to our back yard!  As the previous post indicates, it didn't take very long for the dogs next door to learn not to come barking at our side of their yard.  Unfortunately it doesn't help with them barking at the other side of their yard.  We bought ours at Lowes for about $50.

We have also needed to phone Blendon Township Police who came out and spoke to the owners.  If you are looking for the dog ordinace it is on the Blendon Township website (www.blendontwp.org), click on the Police link and scroll down the page and you'll see another link to the Dog Ordinance.  When you click on that you will see you get a document Resolution 90-04.  Section II deals with Barking and Noisy Animals.  I hope this helps a little.

Just wanted to thank you both for your replies.

Unfortunately, the issue seems to be more aggression than 'boredom barking' for one of the dogs.

So far this dog has bitten a neighbor and a neighbor's dog (not us, or I would have escalated the issue) and, when going nuts, bites at the chain link fence and does not respond to someone calling it in. I have twice knocked on the door and asked them to put the dog inside and it takes a number of minutes before they can control it.

I have ordered and returned the bark control birdhouse, a 'doggy dazer', and a pheremone spray designed to stop barking already. None have been effective for this particular dog. I suppose my next step, outside of walking over and knocking on the door every day, is to involve Blendon Township. Thank you for the link!
